$5m Extra for TCF Textiles Clothing and Footwear Strategic Capability Program

This year’s Budget for the Government’s Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) Strategic Capability Program provides an additional $5.0 million in 2010-11 for the program, bringing the total value to $35.0 million over five years. The program will now also be able to support smaller projects, with the eligibility threshold reduced from $1.0 million to $500,000.

CEO announced for Commercialisation Australia

Mr Doron Ben-Meir has been appointed inaugural CEO of Commercialisation Australia, which helps researchers and entrepreneurs turn ideas into dollars and jobs.
Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr announced the appointment in Melbourne while opening Collaborating for Success – the inaugural conference of the Government’s innovation advisory bodies.
“Mr Ben-Meir will play an essential role in building Australia’s innovation capacity and ensuring that great Australian ideas are developed in this country rather than going offshore,” Senator Carr said.

EMDG 2009 shortfall in funds for claims above $50,000

The popular Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) scheme has attracted an unexpectedly high number of applications from Australian exporters this year. The extra demand demonstrates the success of Australian exporters in weathering the Global Financial Crisis but it also means there is a funding shortfall for larger grant claims.

There are approximately 1,450 companies (30 per cent of grant recipients) likely to be approved for grants in excess of $50,000. These companies are expected to be paid at the rate of between 50 and 70 cents in the dollar on the balance of their claims above $50,000.

Second exposure draft of the R&D legislation released for comment

A second Exposure Draft of the Legislation and Explanatory Materials (EM) was released on 31 March. The legislation and the EM can be found on the Treasury website.

BIC to replace SIP for Textiles Clothing and Footwear (TCF) Grants

More than $112 million of assistance will be made available to the Australian clothing and household textile sector following the passage of important legislation today (18 March 2010). The legislation provides the framework to create the Clothing and Household Textile (Building Innovative Capability) Scheme, supporting innovative activities from 1 July. The $112.5 million scheme, replacing the TCF Post 2005 (SIP) scheme, will provide incentives to promote innovation to support an internationally competitive clothing and household textile manufacturing and design industry.

Green Car Innovation Funds Put Aussie Engine Technology In Chinese Car

The Green Car Innovation Fund grant will help Orbital to develop its FlexDI engine management and combustion system to be tested on engines and in vehicles for Changan Automobile. Orbital Australia has been awarded a $440,413 grant to develop greener engine technology for Chinese automaker Changan Automobile. The fund provides grants from $100,000 for projects that enhance the research, development and commercialisation of Australian technologies that reduce the fuel consumption and/or greenhouse gas emissions of passenger motor vehicles.

$8.9M to turbocharge Australian automotive suppliers

A coaching, mentoring and training program to improve the operational performance of automotive component suppliers is a key outcome from $8.9 million in first-round grants from the Automotive Supply Chain Development Program (ASCDP).
