New Grants

The Defence Industry Development Grants Program has up to $1 million funding for small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) to build Australia’s sovereign capability, global competitiveness, technical superiority and national security. There are four streams within the program, including:

  • Sovereign Industrial Priorities stream – $50,000 and $1,000,000
  • Skilling stream – $5,000 and $250,000
  • Exports stream – $15,000 and $250,000
  • Security stream – $10,000 and $100,000

Deadlines and Timings

Applications are open and will be assessed in batches.

The closing dates for the current batches are:

  • Skilling -Wednesday, 31 July 2024
  • Export streams – Wednesday, 31 July 2024
  • Security -Saturday, 31 August 2024
  • Sovereign Industrial Priorities — Saturday, 31 August 2024

The maximum project period is 24 months.

Overview and Grant Amount

The Defence Industry Development Grants Program (the program) will award grants over four years from 2024–25 to 2027–28. The objective of the program is to build the industrial base Australia needs to achieve Defence outcomes in areas of strategic priority. All projects are due to be completed by 31 Mar 2028.

Grants available range from $50,000 to $1,000,000. The grant amount will be up to 50% of eligible expenditure.

The funding is capped at $3 million in a three-year period per recipient as identified by ABN. If you have received the maximum $3 million in a three-year period, you may apply for further funding within the three-year period but cannot start your new project until the three-year term has expired. The three-year period commences on the date on which the first grant agreement is executed.

Eligibility and Criteria

To be eligible you must:

  • be an SME with less than 200 employees as defined in the Glossary
  • have an Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • be registered for the Goods and Services Tax (GST)
  • have an account with an Australian financial institution
  • be non-income-tax-exempt
  • be an entity, incorporated in Australia; a company limited by guarantee; an incorporated trustee on behalf of a trust

Joint applications are acceptable, provided you have a lead organisation who is the main driver of the project and is eligible to apply.

Eligible Projects

The project must:

  • include eligible activities
  • have at least $100,000 in eligible expenditure
  • be undertaken in Australia

Eligible activities include buying, leasing, constructing, installing or commissioning of manufacturing plant and equipment, including directly related specialist software. Leased plant or equipment must be for a lease period of at least four years.

As they relate to the above activities, this may also include:

  • design, engineering and commissioning activities
  • workforce training and accreditations
