Australian film makers may be eligible for the Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) which provides a cash rebate of up to $150,000 annually for eight years to help market Australian films overseas.
Who can apply?
Film producers, directors or distributors trading as an Australian individual, partnership, company or trust who own the copyright or hold the exclusive right to make a copy of the film, cause the film to be seen or heard in public or communicate the film to the public. This exclusive right can be held as owner, assignee or licensee, but not as agent.
What can you claim?
You may claim costs of eligible promotional activities incurred in the financial year before the application period (previous two financial years for your first EMDG application).
Expenses can include overseas marketing representative, marketing consultants, overseas travel and trademark registration.
Specific to the film industry, you could be able to claim travel and attendance costs to promote at film festivals like Cannes, Hot Docs, SXSW and Beijing Film Festival. Overseas promotional events like in-store promotions and online advertising (Facebook and Google Ads) are also eligible.
What is an eligible product?
To qualify for an EMDG grant, you must have promoted the film for export. The film must have been made in Australia, resulted predominantly from work done in Australia or have been made outside Australia where Australia will derive a significant net benefit from its sale overseas.
When to apply?
Applications for the 2014-15 grant year open on 1 July 2015 and close by 30th Nov 2015.
